Listening: it is something we do every day, but hardly think about. It is essential in our everyday lives to listen. To me, listening is everything. There is a fundamental difference between listening and hearing. You can choose to hear someone talk, or you can listen to what they say. By truly listening to someone, you learn so much more about who they are, and how they feel about something. Listening is an important skill to have as it is absolutely essential for communication. Communication goes both ways, one cannot speak and refuse to listen. That kind of communication goes nowhere. Because of that, listening is an important tool in communication and the key to having successful relationships.
One cannot be a good listener if there is no one willing to talk to them. I never have a shortage of people to listen to me. People always talk to me, it doesn’t matter where I am. At work, customers will often go into greater detail than they should, elaborating on our topic of discussion. There are times when the talking is twice as long as the transaction. People that I have only met once in my life will tell me their life stories. It never ceases to amaze me how open people are to sharing what can be considered personal information. I take their openness as a sign that I am a good listener. Somehow, these people find it in themselves to trust me, and I can only assume that it is because I listen well. Another indicator of my listening skills are my interactions with my friends. They also open up to me, sharing their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. There are times when they confide in me something that no one else knows about. There are also times when they ask for advice, telling me their problems and fears. Because of my passion for listening, I enjoy talking with my friends, and helping them. It is rewarding for me to know that they feel like they can trust me.
I learned to listen at a young age. Even then I knew that it was an important tool in communication. I first became interested in listening when I sat with my mother while she talked with friends and family. She is an excellent listener, and I admired her skills. It was interesting to me to see how candid people will get when talking with one who is willing to listen, not merely hear. I enjoyed the conversations, and slowly over time, I became more aware of how it worked.
To learn how to properly listen, I watched how people interacted with each other in my daily life, in movies, and on television. Through watching all different types of communication I was able to figure out how I wanted to have a conversation, and I learned what I would not like to do. By following good examples and learning from the bad, I have evolved into the listener that I am today. The hardest lesson for me to learn was that there are times when sitting and listening was the best way to handle a situation. I like to talk, so refraining my tongue was a hard lesson, but a valuable one. Part of being a good listener is knowing when to speak and when not to speak. It is the most difficult aspect of being a good listener, but definitely the most important. An ungoverned tongue can do more harm than good.
I have always wanted to be a teacher, and that is what I plan on getting my degree in. A crucial aspect to being a teacher is being able to listen to the needs of ones students and then helping them learn better. A teacher must always be a good listener so they teach for their students, not for themselves. Students do not want to go to a class where their voices are not heard, they want a good learning environment with someone who listens and understands them. I plan on using my listening skills to be the best teacher that I can be for my students. I want to be there for them like so many of my teachers have been for me.
Listening is an important skill to have. One cannot be a good communicator if they are not willing to listen to others. There is nothing worse than the feeling one gets when talking to someone who does not listen. It is an important social skill to have, one that is necessary in all aspects of life. In a technological world like today, many people are losing their communicative skills, yet it is absolutely necessary that all people know how to listen.
